The triathlete sponsored by BH competed in Switzerland at the Team Triathlon World Championships held today in Lausanne. The Swiss team claimed silver, whereas the British team were the winners and the Germans were third.

The Swiss national team, which included Nicola Spirig, Sven Riederer, Ruedi Wild, and Melanie Annaheim, got the silver medal after racing for 1:09:44. The team from Great Britain, made of Jodie Stimpson, Jonathan Brownlee, Helen Jenkins, and Alistair Brownlee, finished in 1:09:29, taking gold. Germany’s Maik Petzold, Steffen Justus, Anja Dittmer, and Svenja Bazlen took bronze in 1:09:56.

Switzerland, whose team had won the two previous events in 2009 and 2010, was unable to retain the title. But this year’s silver medal makes the home team the only to have won medals in all three editions of the new Team Triathlon World Championships.

Spirig, who was 16th yesterday at the penultimate Dextro Energy Triathlon Series event, said that the crowd at Lausanne had helped the team take silver. “I think it was absolutely amazing, a crowd like that, we had so much support and you just can’t go slow, you have to go really, really fast with that,” the Swiss triathlete said after the race.

The ITU Team Triathlon World Championships were launched in 2006 and revamped to a mixed relay team format in 2009. Now athletes compete in four-member teams (two men and two women), racing over 500m/1640ft swim, 5km/3.1mi cycle, and 1.5km/0.93mi run.

This year a record 35 teams from 28 countries participated in the World Championships.
